On Oct 24, musical artist Daniel Caesar released his fifth album, “Son of Spergy,” after releasing his 2023 “NEVER ENOUGH” and 2019 “CASE STUDY 01.”
Known for his cool and chill R&B sound, Daniel Caesar’s “Son of Spergy” touches on themes such as religious faith, reconnecting with family, and past lovers.
“Son of Spergy” gives the listeners a vibe that makes you feel as if you are on a road trip with your life-long friends, traveling through rural and thick areas and waving your arms out of the chilly windows.
The album contains 12 songs; my current favorites being “Have A Baby (With Me),” “Who Knows,” and “Emily’s Song.”
“Have A Baby (With Me)” is about Daniel randomly deciding to propose the idea of having a child with the love interest of his choice without fully thinking it through.
He doesn’t care about the hows and whys; he looks at it as a “why not now?!” type of commitment. When listening to this song, it makes me feel as if I’m walking along the sand at the beach.
“Who Knows” is about all of the endless possibilities of the future and life, which emphasizes the title’s name. Daniel touches on topics such as the possibility of him being a waste of time towards his love interest, him being a coward, and the idea of them getting married.
When listening to this song, it feels as if you are lying in the middle of an empty field of grass and flowers as the sun beams on softly.
“Emily’s Song” is about Daniel expressing gratitude for his love interest, showing him the things he thinks he needs to see. He considers her his “mirror,” allowing her to show him himself.
Even though he’s expressing this gratitude for him, he also mentions that he will “never go back, I hope you know that.”
When listening to this song, I picture myself sitting around a campfire with different people, zoning out into space.
All together, “Son Of Spergy” touches on different themes, specializing in love, faith, and even living in the moment. Even though this album is not my typical choice of sound, I do see myself listening to a lot of the songs on this album again.
