The 98th Academy Awards ceremony aired live on March 15. Hosted by Conan O’Brian, the night was full of jokes and laughter, along with a few tears at a tasteful memorial of all the actors, directors, and artists who had passed in the previous year.
I heavily anticipated this award ceremony since one of my favorite movies “Sinners” received 16 Oscar nominations, the most any film has ever received in this history of the Oscar awards.
Now on to the actual awards. Starting with what I believe to be the most major categories, Michael B. Jordan was awarded best actor for his role in “Sinners,” I think this was very deserved since he had to play a set of twins, each with their own distinct personalities and quirks.
Next, best actress was awarded to Jessie Buckley for her role in “Hamnet.” While I can’t speak personally on her performance in the film, it did receive an 87% on rotten tomatoes as well as a nomination for best picture.
Moving onto the best picture award, that was given to “One Battle After Another.” I feel very conflicted about this decision. While I agree that “One Battle After Another” was a very good film, I think that “Sinners” deserved to win. Of course, I could be biased since I prefer horror movies to action movies.
I also think that “Sinners” just did a better job at creating an ambiance, not only with the music, which got them the best original score award, but also with the cinematography, ironically this was also awarded to “Sinners.”
Speaking more on “Sinners,” the award ceremony featured a performance of the song “I Lied to You,” from the movie. It had several guest artists including Shaboozy, Raphael Saadiq, Brittany Howard, and Misty Copeland, the recently retired ballet dancer. The best original song wasn’t given to “I Lied to You,” that went to “Golden” from the animated movie “K-Pop Demon Hunters.” This movie also won the best animated picture award, which is not something that everyone is happy about.
The movie” K-Pop Demon Hunters” received both praise and hate online. While some of the criticism is valid, one must remember that it is a film made for kids and doesn’t need to be looked at with the most critical eye. If children like it, then it completed its purpose.
All and all, this was a very entertaining ceremony, one that most likely won’t be forgotten any time soon.
