The Death of Renee Good

A shooting of a US citizen sparks protests across the country

On Jan. 7, Renee Good, a citizen of the United States, was fatally shot by an ICE (US immigration and Customs Enforcement) agent. While protests against the federal agency have been Intense ever since they started ramping up their aggressive behavior and detention numbers, this seemed to be the tipping point.

According to Indivisible, a coalition of activists helping coordinate an anti-ICE movement, there were at least 1,000 separate protests across the country planned for Jan. 10 and 11.

While ICE has been extremely aggressive for the last few months, this incident showed that they aren’t afraid to kill someone in broad daylight, even though the US Department of Homeland Security has stated that law enforcement is not permitted to use fatal force to stop a fleeing subject.

However, many say that Renee attempted to run the ICE agent over with her car, providing a reasonable threat to use fatal force. Knowing also that the same ICE agent suffered internal bleeding after the incident and was later taken to the hospital, only to be released on the same day, according to CBS News.

My personal opinion from the footage that I’ve seen is that the ICE agent could’ve easily side-stepped the moving vehicle and remained out of harm’s way. This past Wednesday has shown not that ICE has been let offitss very reasonable leash, but that the leash has been removed from the equation entirely.

Many say that if the people being arrested and deported became citizens legally, they wouldn’t have anything to be worried about, but the system is flawed. It can take ten years to gain citizenship, and even if immigrants did by some miracle get it, it wouldn’t matter. ICE does not just base its deportations on citizenship, they also bases them on color.

This entire administration stinks of old-world troubles and long-gone fascist regimes, and we need to hold them accountable for their trespassing on the constitutional rights of American citizens.
