Several Lakewood students presented their essays about Martin Luther King Jr. at the Enoch Davis Center on Jan. 14, and two Spartans came away with prizes. Taking first place was junior Diamond Brown who won a cash prize and an opportunity to present her work at the Interfaith Memorial Service. Also, junior Ja’shanna Lyons was named honorable mention and won a tablet and a cash prize. This essay contest was available to all high school students in the Pinellas County school district. AVID teacher Chantella Moore said that encouraging her students to participate in the contest prepared them for future college projects. “I am always proud of my students. They are mine and I love them,” Moore said.
