The first-ever comic book club was named the Academy of Comic-Book Fans and Collectors (ACBFC) and was founded in 1961 by Jerry Bails, who is referred to as the “Father of Comic Fandom.”
Comic Book Club is a club where you can make your very own comic book and read old Comic Books to gain an understanding of making them.
“Kids collaborate and read these old comics aging from the 1900’s and get a reference from reading them and make connections to their own comics,” Art Teacher Adam Turkel said.
Turkel also stated, “Comics are a mix of artwork and storytelling that helps the reader understand and feel the emotions of the comic.” For example, Grant Morrison, a well-known comic book writer, likes to have an emotion of empathic humanism.”
The goal of the comic book club is to help the artist and comic book readers create and publish their work for the school to see their work and dedication to the club. Turkel’s daughter, Evaline Turkel, has been developing her own top-secret comic that she plans to share once it’s fully complete.
Turkel explained that the comic book club writers take inspiration from other comic books and blend them into their own story. No comic book is off the table for the club as they made their main mascot a picture of old school batman and robin. This decision was made to show how making a comic can evolve with the right people.
