On Feb. 9, the Cycle 3 testing incentives were announced. The incentives require students to score within the green proficiency area for either the U.S. History, Biology, Algebra, or Geometry Cycle exams to earn the incentives. The incentives include pizza and “sweet treats” as it is described in the announcement.
The goal for these incentives is to encourage students to study for their upcoming Cycle exams, with this Cycle 3 approaching on March 10. Higher scores from students on these exams will reflect better on the school, so not only do these incentives help the students feel motivated to meet their goals, but it also assists Lakewood in meeting their goals.
Junior Kamren Kimble says, “When I see those incentives, they make me want to do better. If I need a 5 to get them, I’ll get that 5 if that’s what it takes.”
Junior Isabella Murray says, “It depends, my scores are struggling most of the time anyway. But, if the goal looks achievable, I’ll try to do better if I get the food. That food motivates me.”
In previous years, the incentives that were offered to students for Cycle tests have been other kinds of food incentives, with examples being Chipotle or Chick-fil-a, as well as events like a Cinema Bistro where students would enjoy a movie in the auditorium.
Junior Kamren Kimble says, “The incentives this time aren’t it. The Cinema Bistro and all that was way better, I feel like I want them to be more specific.”
Junior Sean Balsulto says, “Sometimes the incentives don’t make it that interesting, if you only have one test you normally can’t get the whole incentive, so it doesn’t do anything for me.”
Despite the scaling down of the incentives, students are still excited to aim towards the green when taking their Cycle 3 next month.
