Lakewood High School is preparing to launch a new career pathway called Cosmetic Artistry and Relaxation Education. The program will begin in the 2026- 2027 school year and will give students hands-on experience in the beauty and wellness field.
The pathway is designed to help students explore careers in nail care, skin care, sanitation, and wellness while building strong professional habits that support career readiness.
The CARE pathway is open to rising ninth-, tenth-, and 11th. Students must have at least a 2.0 GPA and meet attendance and behavior expectations. No prior experience is required, which allows students who are intrigued by the beauty industry to join even if they have never practiced these skills before.
Students in the program will learn nail care fundamentals, including shaping, polish application, and simple design. They will also study basic facial and skin care techniques such as cleansing and skin analysis.
The pathway teaches proper use of tools and products, along with important health, safety, and hygiene standards. Professional behavior and client communication are also part of the curriculum, helping Students understand what it is like to work in a salon or spa environment.
Teachers believe the new pathway will give students more opportunities to prepare for life after high school.
“I think that students need as many opportunities as they can get to compete with the pressure of the 21st century,” Lakewood High School teacher Cheryl Parker Smith said.
She sees the program as a way for students to build confidence and learn skills that can support many different career paths.
Students are also excited about what the program offers.
“I am most interested in the hair part of the program,” Myleah Drayton said.
Drayton also shared her long-term goal, explaining: “I want to be an entrepreneur and own my own hair business.”
By adding the CARE pathway, Lakewood High School hopes to support students who are interested in creativity, wellness, and hands-on learning.
The program gives students a chance to explore beauty careers early and develop skills that can help them move toward future training or entry-level work.
