In the season opener, the Lakewood High School football team defeated Boca Ciega High School, 27-12. The game was hosted by Boca Ciega on Thursday. (8/26)

In the first quarter, Lakewood got off to a quick start scoring a touchdown run in by junior running back Montravius Lloyd, supported by a 26-yard pass by junior quarterback Anthony Colendrea. Lloyd was the main source of offense for the Spartans rushing in all four touchdowns the Spartans scored. Lloyd had 17 carries, and 137 yards, averaging 8.1 yards per carry. Later in the first quarter, a fumble was forced by the Spartan defense resulting in a turnover. This possession was stopped however and only seven points were scored for the Spartans in the first quarter.

The Spartans defense did it again with another fumble recovery to start the second quarter and then Lloyd struck again, scoring another touchdown, breaking five tackles on his way. Boca Ciega could not seem to stop Lloyd.

Lakewood, however, was shut down offensively in the third quarter and allowed Boca Ciega to score six points with two field goals.

Things did not look good at the beginning of the fourth quarter as Boca Ciega scored six more points. However, the Spartans struck again, starting with a 41-yard run by Colendrea. This drive again resulted in Lloyd rushing it in for the touchdown. The next drive went by quickly, and like déjà vu, Lloyd rushed it in for the touchdown.

The game was a success for the Spartans as four players contributed to the receiving. However, the game was impacted the most by Lloyd’s rushing ability. Lloyd was named the MaxPreps player of the game.

He said he is excited to be a leader on the team this year.

“(I like) playing football, doing what I like to do and helping the team win,” he said.
