Chipotle has introduced a new menu item on March 6th, Hot Honey Chicken, which adds a sweet and spicy element to Chipotle’s regular flavors. The chain is especially known for its custom bowls and burritos and while Chipotle has tried out different proteins in the past, does this one live up to expectations?
The Hot Honey Chicken is marinated in honey and chili peppers, the char from the grill creates a smokey flavor and allows for a little bit of crispy exterior, while the inside of the chicken stays tender and juicy.
Once you take a bite of the chicken, it hits you with an initial sweet flavor from the honey and then the heat follows. The heat is not overbearing but can be felt once you take your first bite. The spiciness is noticeable as it lingers with each bite.
The amount of heat will also be affected by the toppings and from personal experience, the heat will be a little different based on what goes inside the burrito or bowl.
Adding rice, beans, and cheese will greatly decrease the level of spice, while adding Chipotle’s tomatillo-red chili salsa on top adds more. Similarly, getting guacamole is a great option to lower the heat, but still provide that flavor and chicken, especially if someone wants the hot honey chicken flavor but not the heat.
Responses are somewhat varied. A handful of people are loving sweet and spicy flavors, saying it adds some diversity to the Chipotle menu without moving too far from their traditional favorites.
More than a few mentioned it’s too sweet from the honey and they would prefer the original chicken. Some even mentioned that it’s not spicy enough and expected more spice.
Overall, the Hot Honey Chicken itself is an interesting option for those who prefer a little more flavor to their meal. It’s unique enough to be appealing but also fits nicely into the Chipotle experience. If sweet heat combinations are your thing, be sure to give Hot Honey Chicken a try. If you’re more traditional, it’s best to stay safe and stick with the original chicken or steak.
