Lakewood High Schools esports club has only one loss in the season for popular completive shooter game “Marvel Rivals”.
The “Marvel Rivals” team is tied for second place with the Crooms Panthers and BU. They have only lost one match in the ten week long season.
The club meets every day in the library during lunch and participates in their tournaments every Thursday at 4:30 pm from the comfort of their homes.
“I also just practice online wise, you know, you need to be able to play more online to prepare for the tournaments,” Senior Yue Peters said.
The tournaments take place on Vanta, which is a popular platform used for youth esports clubs like the one we have here at Lakewood.
But tournaments don’t just stop at online platforms like Vanta. There are also opportunities for club members to join local tournaments as well.
“I like being able to not sit around doing nothing during lunch but be able to play games during lunch and do something interactive,” Senior Dakota White says.
The esports club offers a variety of games like cross fighter game “Super Smash Bros” to sports simulation games like “NBA 2k”.
The club also gives students an opportunity to collaborate with each other and gives a space for more shy students to come out of their shell and find people with like interests.
“I started it because I play a lot of video games myself, and I thought it would be a fun way to connect with the students and kind of give them a reason to come to school,” esports club sponsor Christopher Mosher said.
Mosher is working with the CAT assistant principal Lukas Hefty to secure a space on campus just for the esports club for the next school year.
He also wants to help make the esports club more of a district wide club instead of an exclusive club, especially since it works so well in colleges.
“I feel like you should join if you enjoy playing games and due to the cooperation and teamwork that it encourages, whether it’s just sitting there at the table playing games or doing tournaments,” White said.
