Helldivers 2 is now in a better state than ever after months of bug fixes, player buffs, and even a whole DLC’s worth of new content for free.

Despite the greatness of The Omens of Tyranny update, it isn’t the reason Helldivers 2 was saved from the poor state it was in a couple of months ago, that honor goes to the 60-Day Patch Update.

For a slight amount of context a couple of months ago, Arrowhead the developers of Helldivers 2 had a habit of constantly nerfing in-game weapons that the players would use when they proved “too reliable,” to further encourage using other underwhelming items.

Thankfully this approach to balancing was abandoned by the developers after hearing a lot of feedback from the player base. This feedback led to the 60-Day Patch which essentially buffed everything in the game, making previously niche options much more viable and returning old strong weapons to their former glory. For example, the gun “The Spear,” went from being mostly nonfunctional to one of the strongest weapons in the game and fixing its lock-on feature. This update saved Helldivers 2 and made the game more fun than ever and set the grounds perfectly for focusing on new content rather than balancing for a time.

If the 60-Day Patch saved the game, The Omens of Tyranny update revived it. The update added the heavily teased Illuminate enemy faction into the game officially along with new Urban environment maps and a drivable Fast Recon Vehicle. This update dropped completely out of the blue at a time in the community when the hype was starting to die down, not because of the game’s poor quality but because of a long period of no new exciting content.

The new Illuminate faction was massively well-received by the player base and is considered to be the hardest enemy faction in the game to fight. This difficulty is not artificially achieved by making them have an absurd amount of health, but rather through needing a unique playstyle to fight the faction. This faction requires players to have to use new tools to deal with them rather than just using the “meta.”

When this update dropped, however, it completely revived the game’s player base reaching high player numbers equal to that of when the game first dropped.

The Omens of Tyranny update was much needed and since its release the game has seen steady updates of balancing to this day. These updates manifest as story events, balancing, and even a crossover with the Killzone video game franchise which gave the player base many free items.

Even as recently as last week updates and new content continue to be added with new mission types, enemies, and free armors and weapons. As of now, the newer updates are focusing on the game’s enemy Terminids faction, seemingly leading up to the game’s next big story moment likely involving the highly anticipated arrival of the game’s first faction boss, The Hive Lord.

Between events like the “Gloom cloud” in the Terminids front teasing the hive lord and more enemies, and the Illuminate invasion out of the Merdian black hole heading towards Super Earth, there is no lack of oncoming content for this game. If you’re looking for an exciting co-op shooter, now is the best time to try Helldivers 2 as it’s in a better state than ever and will only get better as time goes on.
