One of many clubs offered at Lakewood High School, the esports club, recently hosted a fundraiser which targeted getting new controllers for members of the club.
The esports club has been involved in various competitions throughout the school year but often faces a common problem, not having enough controllers for the number of people that are in the club. Not only that, but the quality of the controllers which impacts their performance while competing.
To tackle this problem members of the club came together to host a fundraiser which took place Dec. 7 at Unlimited Video Games Arcade.
The club was able to raise money by setting up their own stand with the Nintendo Switch which was provided by the school. They then invited people who seemed interested and played Super Smash Brothers and Mario Kart 8 with them.
Having an esports club as an opportunity for students is not only important but also a great idea since many students play video games outside of school. Having clubs and activities like this within a school environment motivates students to come to school as it gives them something that they can look forward to.
“A lot of students in the Center for Advanced Technologies (CAT) Program tend to be interested in video games. So, this gives them an outlet to express who they are and play the games they like to play,” Senior Carlson Gooding said.
As mentioned earlier, with the money raised from the fundraiser you can expect it to be spent on new and improved controllers. This is vital since this is a gaming club and depends on the quality of equipment in order to play video games and compete in competitions within other schools.
