Kodak Black has been one of the biggest names in rap since he released his first solo mixtape “Project baby” in 2013. With plenty of difficulties throughout his career like issues with substance abuse and subsequent jail time due to that issue, seeing a new Kodak album left me with skepticism and at the end of the album I still have it.
With 8 songs, some of my favorite album art I’ve ever seen, and a rather interesting album name I dove straight into the track list and was immediately let down. “Catch fire” is scratchy, clunky, and overall horrible yet somehow not the worst song off the album.
The lowest of the low, and perhaps the worst song I’ve had to review yet must be “Ima Be Real”. It sounds like lyrical throw up if you could even call those lines lyrics, paired with an absolutely ear bleeding beat. I had no choice BUT to pay attention to whatever hot mess was playing on my headphones.
I try to stay positive in my reviews, but as a writer and now a former Kodak fan I just have to ask why? You have platinum hits, a prolific career and name in the rap game and yet you still decide to put out this horrible piece of sound. Whether it was the time in jail or the endless drugs, it’s sad to see a rapper who had such a great understanding of his lyrical skill fall into this kind of dull and stumbling music.
The only song that was tolerable was Harlem nights, it was somewhat enjoyable but being sandwiched between two of the worst songs I’ve ever heard ruined those chances.
Overall, I have to give this album a 3/10. I’m only giving it that extra point because it stands to show the negative effects of hard drug usage. It’s crazy to think of how much talent we’ve seen wasted in the music industry, and Kodak’s fall off might be worse than Kanye West’s especially after seeing his strange behavior on Kai Cenat’s live stream.
