The Heisman trophy is awarded to the best player in college football each year. The current top 5 Heisman trophy favorites in order are University of Miami quarterback Cam Ward, Boise State University running back Ashton Jeanty, University of Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel, University of Colorado Wide receiver and cornerback Travis Hunter and University of Clemson quarterback Cade Klubnik.
The biggest shock of the entire season to this point has been running back Ashton Jeanty who is averaging 192 rushing yards per game, 7.7 yards per carry and has 1,734 to go along with 23 touchdowns in 9 games so far. Jeanty has led Boise State to an 8-1 record so far and they are currently ranked number 13 in the nation. Personally, I believe he should be the one to win it all if he continues on the path that he is in because what he is doing is record breaking and has never been done before.
Another player who has been great this season is Miami quarterback Cam Ward. Ward transferred to Miami from Washington State University this off season. Many expected Ward to be good, but he has exceeded expectations to this point as he has led Miami to a record of 9-1 and they are ranked number 12 in the nation. Ward has thrown for 3,494 yards and he has thrown 32 passing touchdowns and only 6 interceptions.
Last but not least we have Travis Hunter who plays on both sides of the ball as he is a wide receiver and cornerback for Colorado. Hunter was the number one player in the nation coming out of high school and has definitely lived up to the hype. Hunter has helped lead Colorado to a record of 7-2 and rank 18 in the nation. Hunter has 856 yards and 9 touchdowns at receiver and on defense he has 20 tackles, 7 passes defended, 1 forced fumble and 2 interceptions.
This year’s Heisman race should be an exciting one with all the talent this year. The award will go to the best player, and it should end up being a close one.
