In honor of the presidential election, Pinellas Couty Public Schools hosted a mock election to give students the opportunity to vote.
Students were given voter ID numbers in which they put through a website to vote.
The ballot consisted of head presidential candidates: Donald Trump and Kamala Harris, United States Senator: Rick Scott and Debbie Mucarsel-Powell, and Justices of the Supreme Court: Justice Renatha Francis and Meredith Sasso.
This is a great opportunity to give students so they can learn more about the current people in office and ones trying to be in office, political standpoints and beliefs from each candidate and that you can make a change on what you would like to see, based off your vote.
It is important for students to know the benefits of voting as important issues are being addressed in this election such as abortion, economy and immigration.
“Although I’m not into politics, it was nice to see that we get to vote since most of us are not old enough to legally vote,” Junior Jasir Anderson said.
Later, that day Melanie Rogers came onto the intercom to announce the winners for Lakewood High School. Students voted Kamala Harris for president, Debbie Mucarsel-Powell for Senator, and yes to retain both Supreme Court Justices Renetha Francis and Meredith Sasso.
Overall, I liked how Pinellas County Schools took the initiative to host a mock election that gave students the opportunity to vote. This is an important opportunity for students since they know they can be a part of change in this world by voting, believing and advocating what they stand for and participating in voting since most are near the age where they can vote.
