The classic 1996 movie “Twisters,” now returns as a stand-alone sequel to the original with modern technology and filmmaking.

Twisters is a 2024 American disaster film directed by Lee Isaac Chung. Starring an outstanding cast which includes Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell, Anthony Ramos, Brandon Perea, Maura Tierney, and Sasha Lane.

The film focuses on the trauma of the character Kate, who is re-introduced to the wrath of nature by her old friend Javi. She eventually crosses paths with Tyler Owens, a “tornado wrangler,” who recklessly YouTube livestreams his encounters with the heart of tornados. As surges of tornados touch down on central Oklahoma, Kate, and Tyler along with their rival storm-chasing teams fight for their lives, and the tornado.

Despite the controversy over the quality of this film, Twisters is a movie full of combined science and science fiction, action and amazing special effects.

The film’s jump into action keeps the audience interested, and anticipating what happens next. The development of Kate’s trauma and the unfolding of her past is prevalent, still focusing on the major point of tornados, science, and her goal.

Edgar-Jones’s portrayal of the traumatized main character makes it obvious how haunted she is by her past, adding a lot of weight to the story and her occupation. Not only that but her interactions with her old friend, Javi who is played by Ramos, make it obvious she’s reminded of unfortunate events. The supporting actor Powell plays a huge role in pushing out the “old Kate,” in which he does an excellent job of putting on a charming personality which highlights the rivalry between Tyler and Kate show.

Chung’s direction of this film is shown through every scene and the excellent visual effects, cinematography, and CGI of the horrifying tornados that sweep through their path. Everything is complimented by each other, in scenes that are sweet and memorable, destruction and terror are equally as such. Though a disaster film, Chung’s amazing direction makes this a movie that is sharp all around.

The script is filled with details of the passion of past Kate, and the determination of her now. It highlights all of the moments of happy kids. You can feel the tone of tragic events, and the emotion that the actors put out through their words.

The themes and messages shared with us are of the mysteries of tornados and the attraction that they hold towards humans. Not only the desire to discover but the desire to want to take action, and to make a difference even if it means risking your life, to save others.

The movie score in sound production is outstanding, accurately producing the sound of the roar tornados have when they are close, and even the terrifying thunder you can hear in the dark. The music track further enhances the experience, building anticipation and keeping you on the edge of your seat.

Overall, Twisters is both a visual and auditory film that captivates and puts you inside of the character’s situation that appeals to science and movie-loving viewers, all in one.
